There are more people freelancing and starting up small businesses from home than ever before. And more often than not, it means they will need to create a space in their home to accommodate their work.

And the term ‘work’ covers so much. It’s writing, working, designing, procrastination, and so much more.

And if you happen to have young children at home, it can be more difficult but also more important to have a place of your own. There are a few options that work really well for creating working spaces.

This might not be everyone’s first choice, but it can be a great option. Having a shed outside that is dedicated to working – instead of tools and garden items is something many writers have done over the years. Creatives find it beneficial to have walls that are covered in things that find inspiring and to be away from the main house too.

If you don’t have a room that you can dedicate to your work, then you might have to get creative. Small study space-saving furniture is something that will play a big role here. Look for a space that doesn’t get too busy, and perhaps doesn’t have countless people walking by it all the time. To accompany the working nook, you might need some noise-canceling headphones. This will help drown out the background and let you focus on the task at hand.

If you have some spare cash and you own your own home, it might be time to think about adding an extension. Not only is an extension a great investment for your property, but it can provide the perfect space for you to work. It might be a conservatory, or it could be a loft conversion. Whichever one seems like it will be the best option for you.

Try to make sure that it has a lot of light, and always keep in mind what it is that you need from the space.

If you have a room that you usually dedicate to guests there, it might be the ideal place to add a small desk and create a small workspace. That way, you still get the opportunity to close the door when you are working and in your workspace when the day is done. This one might feel a little disruptive from time to time because the idea of a guest room is, of course, so your loved ones can come and spend time with you.

But like with everything when it comes to working at home, there is a balance to be found.

It doesn’t matter how big or small your business is, it is better for your productivity and comfort that you have somewhere that is purely for you to work in. It allows an easier separation between your day-to-day life and the work you do. Being able to set the intention of working and know that space is the place for it can be very empowering to your work too.
